Everyday mobility
- In Göttingen, thanks to the DeutschlandSemesterticket (check the website for instructions and details), public transport is completely free of charge! It’s also integrated within your student ID, so you just have to show it when controlled. It means that short-distance traffic and local transports (excluding IC and ICE) are free of cost and students just have to present their Semesterticket to ticket collectors.
- You can also, however, get yourself a bike. Göttingen is generally pretty bike-friendly, don’t compare it to Groningen, but you know how we mean it here, with bike parking spaces, lanes, many shops to repair your bike, etc.
Mobility outside the city
- Students have mentioned that using trains, though, is usually the best way to travel outside Göttingen. You will find many trains to places like Berlin, Hannover, Kassel, Hamburg, and Frankfurt running on a regular basis. Beware that regional trains (the ones you can use for free with your Deutschlandsemesterticket) will always be late, and you might be stuck at a random station for hours, so be prepared and plan ahead. If you want to travel more comfortably, you could buy tickets for fast trains (IC and ICE).
