For better start of the semester
- Students in Olomouc suggest making a groupchat with fellow Euroculture students and checking in advance what the city offers like sports and cultural activities, so you don't miss out on anything exciting during the first few weeks of your semester.
For during the semester
- In terms of what you should be expecting in Olomouc, students have mentioned that, just like in other universities in the Consortium, the first two weeks it was about introducing the program of each course. The first two months are usually not that intensive in Olomouc workload wise, which leaves a lot of time for exploration, traveling and leisure.
- Make sure you have downloaded official university app UPlikace (for Android and iOs). Via this app you can receive all kind of notifications regarding studies, have an interactive map with all UP buildings and follow actual schedule of the studies.
- Don’t neglect an isUPOL app for ordering food in university cantines (for iOs). For instance, soup normally costs only 10 CZK.
- It is very easy to communicate with lecturers there since all the relationships at the university built on friendship approach. The greatest evidence of that is on Central Europe and the EU class you will have your seminars in cafe!
- Final class is usually held in the pub where you altogether can enjoy the biggest cultural phenomena of Czechia — beer.
For language and elective courses
- As far as electives, many students have chosen the introductory course to the Czech language, which also gives you 4 ECTS and is reputed to be quite fun.
- There are not so many opportunities to learn languages (only if you would like to study Taiwanese or Uyghurian language), however you can regard an opportunity to take additional courses from other faculties. For example, German in EU Law which can give you easy 5 credits, language practice and additional training on the EU history.
- Course on Institutional Design of the EU is highly recommended, it seems that professor Marketa Zapletalova knows the whole Council and Commission in person and can provide you with a lot of details about political bodies and people working there. Exam is not difficult, in turn, however it is recommended to go through all her presentations in advance.
- Some students have highlighted a few things about the courses generally given during a semester in Olomouc. The course offered on Islam is generally the most intense one, with lots of readings, which if prepared proactively, are very doable.
- Visual culture is also an interesting class, with one great presentation assignment which you can also prepare in advance to decompress the end-of-semester workload. In general, though, be prepared for classes where professors encourage participation, depending on the number of students in the group.
